Pontera's non-discretionary tool turns held-away 401(k)s into billable work
The September launch adds the compliance and communication layer that lets RIAs and broker-dealers turn workplace retirement accounts into billed relationships.
Pontera, the New York-based retirement planning firm, will add non-discretionary retirement advice to its platform in September, with a waitlist open now. The held-away 401(k) becomes a fee line when the advice process is documented and auditable — the argument this publication made earlier this week and the gap the launch is designed to close.
Drift calculation, rebalancing advice communications, supervision alerts, audit trails, and reminders are the mechanics that turn a read-only view of a 401(k) into an ongoing, defensible advice relationship, moving the platform past aggregation. Integration with Pontera's ecosystem covers householding, billing, reporting, supervision, and compliance, so a firm can fold a held-away plan into its back office rather than handle it as an orphan.
For advisors at RIAs and broker-dealers, the practical gain is a secure platform where client control is preserved: recommendations land in the client's portal, guided workflows walk them through execution, and in-platform alerts keep both sides current.
Pontera calls these features industry-first, and the label is the company's, but the logic holds: non-discretionary advice demands a richer communication layer than discretionary management because the client, not the advisor, is the one acting.
CEO Yoav Zurel's line in the announcement is that retirement planning cannot be one-size-fits-all because savers are not. The bet is that enough savers want guidance without handing over control and enough advisors want to serve that segment without executing every trade. If the integrations hold up, the administrative burden that kept held-away accounts on the margins is exactly what gets automated away.
The waitlist is open. Firms that build the workflow around it will be the ones converting orphaned accounts into billed relationships when September arrives.
