15-second brief
  • Morgan Stanley reported $15.2 billion in alternative net flows, and InvestmentNews names Wells Fargo and Merrill alongside it among wirehouses expanding alternatives.

  • Fitch reported that nontraded BDC redemption requests eased to 9.8% in the third quarter while the funds still cap quarterly repurchases at 5% of shares.

Morgan Stanley reported $15.2 billion in alternative net flows, and InvestmentNews names Wells Fargo and Merrill alongside it among wirehouses expanding alternatives. The coverage does not say which business line produced those flows, so it does not establish how much of that demand ran through advisors.

Ayako Yoshioka is a strategist at Wealth Enhancement. She said on a Goldman Sachs Asset Management webinar that AI is now a theme in public fixed income, venture, private equity and real estate. If that is right, a client holding sleeves in all four categories can be carrying the same driver in several rows of the statement, which makes asset-class labels a weaker diversification test than they look. That is an inference from her description rather than a finding about any particular fund, and it is the kind of overlap an advisor can check with look-through before treating four categories as four separate bets.

Fitch reported that nontraded BDC redemption requests eased to 9.8% in the third quarter while the funds still cap quarterly repurchases at 5% of shares. Requests above the cap imply that repurchase programs cannot clear everything clients ask to redeem in a given quarter, so the spread between the two figures is a planning input rather than a footnote. A client whose cash need lands in a quarter when requests exceed the cap may receive less than the amount requested, which puts the cap inside the position's liquidity profile at the sizing stage, with other sources of cash kept in reach.

Both items are the same kind of question arriving with the allocation. The flows figure says more alternative dollars are moving; the AI overlap and the BDC cap say the diligence an advisor performs on a sleeve is what determines whether the client can actually get the diversification or the exit they were sold.
